What is Squidcast?
As digital technologies like high-definition video & high-res photography empower us to record experiences and produce personal media at increasingly high quality, we need a way to easily and freely give these large media files to our friends & family online. Until now, online media-sharing and file-sending services have either restricted file size and quality or charged money for larger deliveries.
Squidcast offers a free service for sending and streaming your full-resolution high-definition movies, high-res photos, and any other files to people you know online. We use patented, secure, and robust technology to ensure that you can safely and rapidly send and stream your high-res digital media to all your friends and family!
How many files can I send?
As many as you want! You can even send entire folders at once! We are living in an increasingly sophisticated digital world, which requires lots and lots of space. Got a digital camera? Bought an HD camcorder? Make digital music? Send and stream it securely to all of your personal contacts for free.
How do I use Squidcast?
First, create a package by dragging and dropping all of the pictures, videos and other digital media that you want to send to your friends and family – all within your browser. Next, give the package a name and add a list of your friends and families email addresses. Hit send – that’s it! When your friends and family want to download your package, the pieces are brought together and reassembled into the original, full-resolution digital media that you originally sent.
What is a Squidcast package?
Think of a package as a digital version of a package you would send in the mail. Create a package with a single click and then fill it with your favorite pictures, movies and other digital media. Then send your package to your friends and family, or open packages that were sent to you!
Is my data secure?
Very! Squidcast doesn't take any chances with anyone’s digital media and offers two kinds of protection. First, we use state-of-the-art encryption algorithms to scramble all the digital media you send with Squidcast. Second, beyond the encryption, your digital media is broken into multiple fragments and then spread across lots of computers. Only your friends and family that you give your media to can bring all of the fragments together and unlock them when they receive your package.
What if I forget my password?
No worries. You can easily reset your password anytime. Click on the "Forgot your password" link and enter the email address you used to create your secure Squidcast mailbox, and then click the "Reset Password" button. We'll immediately send an email to that address with a link to create a new password.
Can my friends and family still access packages I sent them if my computer is not on?
Yes! In fact this is an important part of the service we offer. Everybody's computer will go down at one point or another. A hard disk will crash, a power supply will go bad, or you will simply unplug your laptop, put it in your car and drive away. During all of these cases, your friends and family still have complete access to all of the packages you have sent to them.
How can Squidcast offer this service for free?
To avoid charging our members for our service, Squidcast uses innovative technology to take advantage of one of the largest untapped resources available today: distributed disk space & bandwidth. Because we can largely eliminate the need to buy huge amounts of costly centralized storage and bandwidth, Squidcast can provide this service to our users for free.
